To get rid of rodents, it’s important to understand why or how they are entering your home or business. Like most other pests that could infest your home or business, they are attracted to your property because it offers easy access to food, shelter from the elements, and protection from predators.
Types of Rodents
There are a few different types of rodents in the United States ranging in size and appearance. Being able to identify rodents can help you treat rodent infestation quicker and more easily. Our team of pest control professionals at Las Vegas Pest Control has effective pest control solutions to treat pests safely based on their behavior.
Rats
Brown Rat (Norway rat)
Norway rats are the largest type of rats, have shorter tails, and have darker hair color than other rats. Their hair ranges from gray to reddish-brown. They manage well, even in the biggest cities, and are always able to find food and shelter. They can eat anything a human can eat so that they may thrive in every household. They are often found in crawl spaces, as they build their nests near the ground, and are a primarily nocturnal pest.
Black Rat (Roof Rat)
Black rats are known as roof rats, because they nest in high areas, such as in attics and trees. Roof rats are a bit smaller than Norway rats and have longer tails. They can be identified by their pointy noses and long ears. Their hair is lighter than Norway rats’ and is typically light gray. They tend to be pickier than their bigger cousins; they prefer eating seeds, nuts, fruits, or vegetables, small animals, and many materials that are inedible for people, such as paper.
MICE
Field Mouse
Deer mice get their name from their jumping and running abilities. Their bodies are light brown with a white belly. They have smaller bodies, about seven inches in length, which allow them to fit in small holes. Their teeth are so sharp that they can chew through the hardest shells. They thrive in warmer climates and don’t like the cold. Most often, you can find them in attics and crawl spaces where they store their food.
House Mouse
House mice have a darker hair color, which ranges from light brown to black. These mice prefer to nest inside homes for the long term, unlike deer mice that are only seeking shelter from inclement weather or are on the hunt for a food source. House mice can fit in holes the size of a dime and typically utilize power lines or foliage to access rooftops or attics. Then they enter buildings through pipes.
